Rawalpindi - An inmate of Adiala Jail died in hospital on Sunday after another inmate allegedly attacked him while he was sleeping in his cell, said the sources.
The deceased was identified as Anwar Aziz, a murder convict who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court of law, the sources added. Police registered a case against the inmate named Mehtab Hussain on charges of attacking Anwar Aziz. The jail authorities claimed that both inmates were mentally retarded and imprisoned in a cell housing such patients.
According to the sources, prisoner Mehtab Hussain alias Jani hit Anwar Aziz on the head with an iron manhole cover while he was sleeping in his cell on the night of February 7. As a result, Anwar sustained fatal head injury and was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. However, the doctors referred the victim to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital because of his serious condition.
Sources added that the victim died of head injury at the hospital and the dead body was handed over to the heir for burial.
Superintendent Adiala Jail Saeed Ullah Gondal, in a statement, confirmed the death of inmate at DHQ Hospital. He informed that the deceased was awarded life imprisonment by a Court for murdering a man within limits of Police Station (PS) Civil Line in 2008. He said both the inmates were under treatment in a ward for the mentally challenged patients. He added that Deputy Inspector General Prisons Rawalpindi Region Navid Rauf held a detailed inquiry into incident and forwarded his report to Inspector General of Prison Punjab. Taking action, he said IG Prisons placed an Assistant Superintendent/Incharge Barrack, Warder Incharge and duty warder under suspension on account of showing negligence.
He said that PS Saddar Bairooni had earlier lodged an attempted murder case against the inmate involved in attack but would now insert murder charges in the First Information Report (FIR).
On the other hand, Saddar Bairooni police are investing the matter after inserting section 302 of PPC in the FIR that had been registered on plaintiff of Zafar Iqbal, Assistant Superintendent Prison.
