LAHORE - The top leadership of all mainstream opposition parties will board Dr Qadri’s bandwagon on January 17 to steer the agitation against the government.

The steering committee of the opposition parties which met here took a unanimous decision that various party heads, including Asif Ali Zardari, Imran Khan, Ch Shujaat Hussain, Pervaiz Elahi and Sirajul Haq, will participate in the protest demonstration to be held in Lahore on January 17.

The opposition parties have joined hands with PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri to seek justice for the Model Town victims.

A multi-party conference (MPC) held on December 30 had given January 7 deadline for the resignations of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and others responsible for the Model Town incident.

The deadline expired without any development and the multi-party conference’s steering committee set January 17 as the date to launch a protest movement against the government.

The committee could not reach any decision on the mode of the protest movement, it was learnt. A source privy to the meeting, however, said most of the parties were in favour of staging a rally on The Mall followed by countrywide sit-ins to topple the government.

PML-Q’s Kamil Ali Agha, one of the members of the steering committee, told The Nation that Charing Cross on The Mall would be the venue of the opposition’s protest which could take any form.

Later, addressing a news conference along with representatives of the opposition parties, Dr Tahirul Qadri claimed January 17 protest would prove a final round to pull the rug from under the feet of the present rulers. The PAT chief said he had invited all the opposition parties to join his protest movement.

When asked about the mode of the agitation, he said all options were open to the opposition parties and they could go to any extent to seek justice while remaining within the limits of the constitution and democracy.

He added the steering committee would meet again on January 16 to take a final decision in this regard. “All modalities will be finalised by 12 noon on January 16,” he said.

Talking about the participation of different political parties in the movement, Dr Qadri was apparently not sure how many leaders would be attending his January 17 rally in Lahore. “There is only one container. I am not sure how many leaders will be coming to join me on that day,” he remarked.
