KARACHI - The dispute of fishing in inland waters has been remained unsolved, as the meetings between Sindh Fisheries Minister and fishermen representatives' bodies ended result-less. The fishermen bodies demanded to implement the orders to issue fishing licenses, while the contractors insisted on resuming the contract system, The Nation learnt on Wednesday. According to the well-placed sources in the ministry, provincial Minister for Fisheries Zahid Burghuri held a meeting with fishermen representatives' bodies in his office on Wednesday, where the fishermen bodies urged to implant the orders to abolish the contract system and issue the licenses to the local fishermen. The fishermen representatives' bodies have also complained to the minister that high officials of concern fisheries department avoid to issue fishing license to the local fishermen despite of issuing directives by the provincial government. The fishermen bodies alleged that the authorities concerned are making their efforts to provide beneficiaries to the contractors, they also added that since the ban was imposed on contract system, the officials have been hatching conspiracies to resume the contract system. It must be mentioned here that, the previous Sindh Government has abolished the contract system and issued special orders to issue licenses to the local fishermen, while despite passing of several months, neither the higher authorities took the matter seriously to eliminate the prolong contract system nor the license for fishing has been issued properly. The fishermen bodies said that unless the legislation is not done in assembly on this regard, the bureaucrats would not allow implementing the orders to abolish the contract system. The source also revealed that earlier the first meeting was held between both the parties, where instead of fishermen representatives bodies, a number of contractors took part in the meeting on behalf of fishermen bodies, while only few representatives of genuine fishermen bodies were present on the occasion. The Minister presided over the meeting, where the minister made his efforts to end the prolonged dispute of fishing in inland waters, but the fishermen bodies and contractors started to allege each other. It also should be mentioned here that the local fishermen and their representatives' bodies have been opposing the contract system and they had also launched several campaigns in this regard.
