Pakistan have the edge

Pakistan, runners-up in the first Twenty-20 World Cup in South Africa two years ago, take on Sri Lanka in their first match of the Super Eights at Lord's on Friday (June 12). This match will start 18.30 hours (PST). It will be the second match between the two teams in Twenty-20 World Cup and fourth match overall. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 33 runs when they met first time Twenty-20 World Cup match at Johannesburg on September 17,2007. Magnificent half-centuries from Shoaib Malik (57) and Younis Khan (51) propelled Pakistan to a formidable total and a miserly three-wicket spell from Shahid Afridi then choked the life out of the Sri Lankan chase as they romped to a facile 33-run victory at the Wanderers. Sri Lanka had started superbly, with Dilhara Fernando producing an impeccable spell of 2 for 17, but their subsequent nightmare was best summed up by the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya, pummelled for 64 in his four overs and then knocked over for just five. Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan added 101 at a tremendous clip after Pakistan were struggling at 33 for three. In the second match between the two teams at Kings City on October 11,2008, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets while Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by five wickets in the final of the tournament two days later. Pakistan entered the Super Eights by finishing second in Group B while Sri Lanka qualified for the Super Eights by taking top position in Group C. They are in the Group F along with New Zealand and Ireland. West Indies will face holders India in the second match of the day at the same ground. This match will start 21.30 hours (PST). It will be the first match between the two teams in Twenty-20 World Cup as well as in Twenty-20 cricket. India entered the Super Eights by finishing top in Group A while West Indies qualified for the Super Eights by taking second position in Group C. They are in the Group E along with England and South Africa. The top two teams from each group in the Super Eight series of the competition will progress to the semi-finals where the team placed first in Group E will play the team placed second in Group F and the team placed first in Group F will play the team placed second in Group E.
