LAHORE (APP) - Punjab Excise & Taxation Department achieved 90 per cent taxes collection target in different categories for the fiscal year 2009-10 till May 31,2010. This was stated by Punjab Minister for Excise & Taxation Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman during a press conference here at Transport office on Friday. Secretary E&T Khawaja Shumail and DG Excise Punjab Khawaja Ahmed Dawood also were present on the occasion. He said for the first time the E&T department achieved 90 per cent target upto May 31 and 100 percent taxes would be collected till June 30. The Minister said that the total target of taxes including Motor Vehicle Tax,Professional Tax, Property Tax, Cotten Fee, Excise Duty, Hotel Tax, Medicinal Opium and Entertainment Duty for 2009-10 was Rs 11363.45 millions out of which Rs 10220.51 millions was collected upto May 31 that is Rs 2192.68 millions higher than 2008-09. Mujtaba said that the tax collection of MVT, Professional Tax, Property Tax, Cotten Fee and Excise Duty was higher than the year 2008-09 and the recovery drive continue till June 30. Referring to the collection of Luxury Tax on heavy imported vehicles, he told that almost 90 per cent amount was collected so far as the target was Rs 820 millions out of which Rs 720 millions were recovered and the campaign was still in progress. To a question, he said Property Tax was not being increased by 500 per cent adding that the government would revise the schedule of Property Tax as it had not been increased for last eight years. He said that a drive against the defaulters of Property Tax was on and Rs one Billion had been recovered so far which was a major achievement. Excise Minister said that a major reforms package for E&T department was in pipeline which would facilitate all tax payers especially the women and senior citizens. Excise police stations would also be set up in the province with the first one in Lahore, he added.
