LAHORE (APP) - Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) is expecting an additional quantum of 3267 MW electricity to be inducted into the national grid by mid July. Briefing media at Wapda House here Friday, the PEPCO Director General (Energy Management and Conservation) Engineer Muhammad Khalid said hydel generation has 1900 MW potential, as it would reach up to 6500 MW from the current 4702 MW. While, Guddu Power Stations Units No. 6 and 9 of 100 MW capacity each and 300 MW CHASHNUPP, which was closed due to scheduled maintenance, would be inducted in the system by 15th of this month, he added. The DG said the Unit No. 2 (180MW) and Unit No. 5 (160MW) of Muzaffargarh Power Station, which were on forced outage due to some technical faults, would restore generation on June 12 and 13, respectively. The Independent Power Producers (IPPs) including Safire 225 MW, the gas-operated Foundation Powers 200 MW and Nishat Power Plat (Chuniya) 200 MW would start contributing their generation capacity in the main system by mid next month. To a question, he said, the power load-shedding, however, could not be lifted permanently following rise in the electricity demand in the coming months. During the last year, the maximum power demand in the country recorded at 18432 MW, he maintained. To another question, Engineer Khalid said the IPPs including Saif Power Plant, Orient Powers of 225 MW each, Nishat Power Plant (Jamber) of 200 MW and Gulf Rental Power Plant of 62 MW had been added in the system. Giving power generation scenario during last 24 hours, he said, the peak power generation remained at 12955 MW against the demand of 14440 MW, showing a shortfall of 1485 MW in the country, while the PEPCO exported maximum of 600 MW to Karachi Electric Supply Corporation. Giving the power generations break-up, he added, the hydel power stations produced 4702 MW, Thermal 2464 MW, IPPs 5648 MW and RPPs 141 MW. The load-shedding is being done two hours in cities and four hours in rural areas, he responded to a questioner. Responding to a query, he said, the Company had so far spent Rs 3 billion out of Rs 3.788 billion grant given to it for the current fiscal year.
