ISLAMABAD  - Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif chaired a meeting of the Formation Commanders at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

According to the statement released by ISPR, the conference was attended by Corps Commanders, Principal Staff Officers and all Formation Commanders.

Gen Raheel Sharif, speaking on the occasion, said that Pakistan Army would not let sacrifices of its martyrs go in vain.

The COAS also vowed that terrorist elements would be eliminated at all cost.

The forum was given comprehensive briefings on external and internal security situation. The participants of the conference also dwelt at length on various professional matters.

The military leadership also discussed the future strategy of the army.

During the formation and corps commanders meeting on Wednesday, it was decided that the military operation would be initiated only against Mulla Fazlullah, Mehsud tribe, Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group and foreign militants.

The meeting was held at a time when Taliban-claimed attacks on Karachi airport raised questions about the authorities’ ability to secure key facilities.

Sunday’s all-night battle at old terminal building left 39 dead while Tuesday’s attack on a security check post was repulsed. In apparent retaliation, military launched airstrikes in Khyber Agency, killing 25 suspected terrorists and destroying their nine hideouts.

The dramatic siege by heavily armed militants piled pressure on the government to act. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, while presiding over a meeting of National Security Committee in Islamabad Tuesday, directed the security agencies to heighten security at key state installations.
