Government harassing political activists: Opp

LAHORE - Major opposition parties have claimed that the government was harassing the political workers by conducting raids at their houses with the purpose to stop them from participating in the long march and sit-in at the Constitutional Avenue, Islamabad. The opposition parties alleged that the law enforcement agencies have arrested thousands of political workers across the country and more arrests are expected in coming days. The leadership of opposition parties has, meanwhile, asked their workers to take measures to avoid arrest and take active part in long march and sit-in. Addressing a seminar at Mansoora, Ameer Jama'at-e-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that raids and arrests would further enhance enthusiasm among political workers. He said that military intervention was not the solution to the prevailing crises. He urged the government to stop harassing political workers as arrests and raids would fail to stop long march and sit-in. He said that reinstatement of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other deposed judges could avert crises and improve situation. He said that it was a pity that the democratically elected government was taking undemocratic step. He said the popularity of the PPP was on the decline while confidants of Benazir Bhutto including Aitzaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani, Safdar Abbasi and Naheed Khan were sidelined. Meanwhile, the JI held a meeting at Mansoora on Wednesday to review raids and arrests of political workers. JI Naib Ameer Liaquat Baloch chaired the meeting attended by party leadership including Farid Ahmed Piracha, Azhar Iqbal Hassan, Zafar Jamal Baloch, Waqas Jafferi and Ch Abdul Wahid. Condemning raids and arrests, Liaquat Baloch said that the nation has seen real face of the PPP. He said that the long march and sit-in would be peaceful. He said that the political workers would definitely participate in long march and sit-in and all efforts of the government would fail. He urged the rulers to restore judiciary to November 2 position to avoid long march and sit-in. Farid Ahmed Piracha said that imposition of section 144, raids and arrests would further intensify movement for the restoration and independence of judiciary. He said that the workers would actively participate in long march and sit-in and all efforts to stop it would fail. Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan has condemned raids and arrests of political workers, saying that the government was afraid of public reaction on its undemocratic steps. He said that participation in long march and sit-in was the democratic right of political workers. He said that the political workers would participate in long march and sit-in at every cost to fulfill the dream of independence of judiciary. Chairman Markazi Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) MNA Fazal Karim alleged that the Police have removed reception camps for lawyers in Gujranwala, Sialkot, Jhelum and Kharian. He said that hundreds of political workers have been arrested but such tactics would fail to stop long march and sit-in. General Secretary Labour Party Nisar Shah has condemned crackdown and arrest of hundreds of political workers. He said that arrest of political workers on a large scale has unveiled true face of the PPP and its allies. He said that the government has no right to stop workers from participating in peaceful protest. Condemning arrests of political workers and imposition of section 144 in the province, Information Secretary Tehreek-e-Istaqlal Pakistan Hanif Goraya has demanded immediate release of arrested workers. He said that the steps of Governor Punjab have reminded the Musharraf rule. He said that all efforts of the government would fail and long march and sit-in would definitely achieve success.
