ISLAMABAD - Elections for the slots of chairman and deputy chairman of Upper House of the Parliament would take place today (Thursday) through secret ballots, while the 50 senators-elect would also take oath as senators. Pakistan People's Party had fielded Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek as party candidate for the slot of chairman, while PML-Q President Ch Shujaat Hussain was also contesting for the top slot of the Upper House. Some 50 senators who had completed their constitutional term of six years would also retire today. Government had appointed Senator Col (Retd) Tahir Mashhdi of MQM as its presiding officer for the election of chairman and deputy chairman. For the slot of deputy chairman Senate, Pakistan People's Party is extending support to the sitting Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Mohammad Jamali and he would likely win the elections with ease, as the main focus of the parties was on the slot of chairman Senate. The sources disclosed to TheNation that PPP and PML-Q were engaged in backdoor interaction to enter into some sort of alliance to attempt to form government in Punjab. These sources said that PML-Q could get the slot of chairman Senate for its support to PPP candidate for chief minister in Punjab and also join hands with PPP in forming the government in Punjab. The sources said that PML-N was also in constant touch with Q-League, both for the elections of chairman and deputy chairman Senate and formation of coalition government in Punjab.
