KARACHI - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that government will foil every attempt aimed at jeopardising the democracy. He also said that PPP had rendered sacrifices for democracy and both Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had sacrificed their lives for the cause of democracy. Talking to newspaper editors, writers and anchor persons here at the Governors House on Friday, Prime Minister Gilani dispelled the impression of clash between the institutions and said ongoing tussle was a struggle of exercising authority and determining perimeters. He suggested to opponents of Kalabagh Dam to take up the issue at the CCI meeting which was its proper forum where the similar issues like Bhasha Dam and ownership of Thar coal had been resolved satisfactorily and soon work on the Bhasha Dam would be going to start. He responded to almost all the questions from law and order to global recession and from provincial autonomy to holding of talks with India. Responding to questions the Prime Minister said the government was pursuing a strategy to implement its 36-point election manifesto and added that during the last three years the government had so far covered 21 points. He pointed out that it was sound and well-planned policy of the government that despite global recession, ongoing war against terrorism and devastation of last years floods, the country had not only achieved autarky in wheat but was also exporting it. Terming the law and order situation a provincial issue, the Prime Minister said as far Balochistan was concerned, the province was facing multiple issues including terrorism, extremism and attempts by foreigners to implement their agenda. The present government had made attempts to remove sense of deprivation among Baloch people by extending provincial autonomy and under Aghaz-e-Haqooq Balochistan Package, over 6,000 to 7,000 jobs were provided to youths in the province. He said that problems in Balochistan could not be resolved in two to three years as during the past 63 years no serious efforts were made to mitigate their issues. Aghaz-e-Haqooq Balochistan Package is a start and the government is trying to ameliorate the lot of people of Balochistan, he added. Regarding power shortage issue in the country, Premier Gilani said the government was working on short, medium and long-term projects which would take years in implementation.
