After the attack on the Sri Lankan Cricket team on March 3, 2009 at Lahore, the international cricket teams have refused to come and play in Pakistan. This really has proved to be very harmful for our cricket as domestic spectators have been deprived of watching competitive cricket inside their country. For Pakistans domestic series, international teams have been playing with our team on neutral venues such as England and UAE. This has added to huge financial loss to PCB as well. Given this background, there is need to resume international cricket in Pakistan and this can be possible by taking the following steps: Due to worsening law and order situation in the country, almost all the international cricket teams are fearful of playing in the Pakistani cities. For resumption of international cricket, it is of vital importance that law and order situation be improved in the country so that the international cricket teams or otherwise of other sports are able to come to Pakistan without any fear. Secondly, there is need to start cricket diplomacy for the resumption of international cricket in our country. With the approval of the government of Pakistan, individuals like Imran Khan, Arif Abbasi, Shahriyar Khan, Gen Tauqir Zia, Khalid Mahmood, etc should be sent to all the test playing countries with the mandate to convince the chief executives of the cricketing boards of these countries for sending their teams to Pakistan. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board can be of immense help to Pakistan in resumption of international cricket in our country by sending its national Cricket team to Pakistan. It was Pakistan first, which had willingly offered and accordingly played in Sri Lanka some 16 years ago when almost all the international Cricket teams had refused to play there. The Sri Lankan government must prove that "a friend in need is a friend indeed". Again with the approval of the government of Pakistan, our foreign minister should take up the issue of resumption of international cricket with his/her counterparts of the test playing nations such as England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and West Indies. Then the role of veteran cricketers of Pakistan such as Hanif Muhammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, Asif Iqbal, etc. cannot be ruled out in the resumption of international cricket in Pakistan. They can convince their veteran cricket friends in these countries regarding convincing their boards and current players for playing in Pakistan. For resumption of international cricket in Pakistan, it is very important that firstly conducive environment should be created for the same in the country. The international teams of other sports such as hockey, squash, football, kabbadi, etc should be invited in the country. In this way, a general impression would go throughout the world that Pakistan is a safe country for international teams. ABDUL SAMAD SAMO, Karachi, March 11.
