Pakistan Army will be conducting large-scale military exercises by the name of Azm-e-Nau 4 in September and October. Keeping in mind that India is currently holding war games close to our border and that too with the US, we can ill afford to let our guard down. India’s weapon buying spree constitutes yet another aspect that calls for a constant state of vigilance on our part.
These exercises are planned by Pakistan’s top military brass to mould the Pakistan armed forces into a formidable fighting force, to deeply instil professional attributes among the various cadres. Such gruelling exercises reinforce the spirit of devotion in the armed forces to defend the motherland’s frontiers, rather than needlessly interfere in civilian matters. In fact, in the words of Editor-in-Chief of The Nation, Majid Nizami, Pakistan does not need ‘my dear countrymen’ type of Generals. Such Bonapartist Generals initially try to convince the public that the situation has hit rock bottom and that it has become impossible for the armed forces not to intervene. However, as experience shows, these military rulers do colossal harm to the country. They fail primarily for the reason that the armed forces are not cut out to govern but to watch the defence of the country. It is for this reason that the armed forces should be kept busy and moulded only to the role of protecting the motherland. Mr Majid Nizami, in an address, emphasised equipping the country’s armed forces with state-of-the-art weapons that Pakistanis provide for with their taxes, in order to defeat foreign powers actively involved in pursuing an agenda which is causing Pakistan's stability, harmony and economy tremendous harm. Given the uneasy alliance between India and America in Afghanistan the role of Pakistan's armed forces is of utmost importance - but only as far as defence is concerned - of our physical frontiers, to be even clearer.
Under the circumstances, there is no excuse for the military to keep its focus away from defending the country from the grave threats it faces. It is also the need of the hour that since the Interior Ministry has in the past confirmed that proof of involvement of foreign powers, including India, in fomenting domestic violence can be found, our intelligence agencies ought to be mobilised to pursue and present this proof. Given the amount of money Pakistan spends on its defence, it is time that the investment paid off and those who wish to interfere in our affairs to our detriment are successfully defeated.
