LAHORE – Excise and Taxation (E&T) department has sought permission from Finance department to reassess certain properties in the city to collect more taxes, said sources in E&T on Monday. They said that under section 4/D of Urban Immoveable property tax of Excise Act 1958 educational institutions controlled by Punjab government were exempted from property tax. But Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BI&SE) was using a building for commercial purpose situated at Lawrence Road. An E&T officer said that prescribed notices were issued to the management of BI&SE but they remained unmoved and did not paid tax of the commercial building which was being used for examination purpose. BI&SE after notices contacted LHC but E&T management sealed the building. He said that management of BISE was defaulter of Rs 3.2m. Similarly E&T has claimed taxes from management of Shaheen Complex situated at Edgerton Road, but they were of the view that that complex was meant for welfare activities of Air Force retired employees.

Shalamar Hospital’s management was reluctant to pay property tax only for the reason that they claimed that the hospital was being run for charity purpose. But E&T officers were of the view that the hospital was being used as commercial purpose and no free treatment was being given to the poor people there. E&T officer seeking anonymity said that after getting permission from the EDO Finance CDGL they would reevaluate the said properties for the last 10 years and tax would be collected for the missing period.
