TERISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday suspended for time being Election Commission’s verdict of issuing open pages book as electoral symbol to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and sought comments from electoral body over the issue.A division bench of IHC comprising Chief Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi and Justice Shaukat Saddiqui heard a petition filed by JUI-F General Secretary Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri. In the petition, JUI-F challenged ECP verdict of allotting open-pages book and requested the court to direct electoral body for the allotment of closed book as election emblem.Through his counsel JUI-F leader pleaded that JUI-F had been contesting elections since 1996 with book as election symbol, but now ECP changed his party’s election symbol. “The symbol of close book is being used for the petitioner from decades at least from the last three General Elections,  the same has been changed with open pages book,” read the petition. Recently, ECP following complaints against JUI-F chief and his candidates, has swapped the book with open one with some alphabets and digits. ECP official says that they received complaints that during the last elections people were given impression that the symbol was a gateway to heaven. After hearing arguments from JUI-F, division bench suspended ECP order and issued notice to and adjourned the hearing till March 21,2013.
