Under the directive of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the grant for universities is being increased for promotion of higher education in the country according to the international standards, disclosed the state minister for education.

State Minister for Education and Interior Affairs Mian Baleeghur Rehman was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Inter-Universities Women Football Championship-2014 held at Abbasia Campus Islamia University of Bahawalpur.

The minister said that sports activities were essential for healthy body and mind so also females should take part in games actively to keep them active and disciplined. He said, “Sports teach us a lot during competitions and we learn a lot and it helps us perform remarkably in every field of life. Sports give us a lesson of fair play and disciplined life through which we could promote tolerance, harmony and spirit in the society for healthy conditions,” he said.

He advised the students to promote healthy activities through participation in games as this was another way to serve the nation and country with distinction. He hoped that the participating teams would surely maintain standards of game and set good examples for others.

IUB Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Mukhtar in his address on the occasion said that Islamia University of Bahawalpur was one of the best places for the promotion of sports as it had been providing maximum sports facilities for players who had been performing remarkably in different sports competition.

He extended gratitude over HEC’s confidence in the University for holding women’s sports competitions. He remarked that the IUB students had won a many competitions and succeeded to maintain their 3rd position in the male and female sports competitions conducted by the HEC during last 4 years.

He further said, “We have been getting progress day by day in the academic field too besides providing maximum opportunities of sports and co-curricular activities for the students to explore their talent. So, our students have been performing exceptionally in all sections.”

Seven universities of the country are taking part in the championship including the defending champion University of Sargodha, Punjab University, University of Lahore, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore College for Women University, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University, Peshawar and the host, Islamia University of Bahawalpur.

Two matches were played on the opening day in which the host Islamia University of Bahawalpur defeated the Lahore College Women University by 2-1 goals. In the other match, the Lahore University of Management Sciences defeated the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University by 1 goal.
