The poverty, ignorance, unemployment and terrorism could only be eliminated by eradicating illiteracy from the country and that’s why the Allama Iqbal Open University is committed to promote education in the country, Regional Director AIOU Dr Muhammad Anees said here on Tuesday.

While addressing a workshop of MEd and MA students in the local high school here today, he said that AIOU was playing vital role in the promotion of education so as to enable the unemployed youth to stand on their feet and play their role in the progress and prosperity of the country.

Later, ‘Fateh’ was offered for the departed soul of former Director of AIOU Gujranwala Region Mian Muhammad Aslam who was martyred in the Islamabad Courts bombing incident recently. Rich tributes were paid to the departed soul for his efforts for the promotion of education in the region.

PASSES AWAY: Mother of Professor Ejaz Nazir Butt and Professor Khalid Nazir Butt has died in Hafizabad after protracted illness. She was laid to rest in the railway lines graveyard. The funeral was attended by large number of educationists, lawyers, traders and social and political workers of Hafizabad.

Bandits on the loose: Armed bandits snatched two motorcycles and cash amounting to Rs200,000 while injured one on resistance in two separate incident here on Tuesday morning.

According to police source, Muzaffar Hussain Arhti of Qila Sahib Singh along with Fakhar Ali was the way to Sabzi Mandi on his bike (HLK-7496) on Kolo Road. When they reached near Slaughterhouse, two armed bandits intercepted them. However, on their resistance they opened firing as a result of which Fakhar Ali was seriously injured and the bandits snatched their bike and cash amounting Rs100,000.

The injured was removed to DHQ Hospital.

The City Police have registered a case. In another incident, armed bandits setup a picket near Head Sagar and snatched cash amounting to Rs75,000 and a bike from over a dozen villagers.

According to them, the armed bandits snatched bike (FDL-1840) from Iftikhar Ahmad of Kotli Ameer Singh and cash amount of Rs38,000 from Ghulam Sarwar, Rs19,000 from Mudassar Naeem and snatched away small cash and cell phones from over a dozen villagers.

The Sadar police have registered a case against the accused and as usual are investigation without arresting any of the accused.
