LAHORE - Lahore SSP (Investigations) Rana Ayaz Saleem has said that a special crackdown has been launched in the provincial metropolis against illegal arms as part of the National Action Plan (NAP).

“During last two weeks, we have seized a huge cache of arms including automatic assault rifles. This exercise will help police control gun crimes in the province,” Ayaz Saleem told reporters on Wednesday.

He further said that the police had recovered illegal firearms including AK-47 rifles, 8mm and 244-bore rifles, hundreds of pistols and thousands of bullets from the suspects. “The police investigators are ordered to step up the campaign against illegal arms by taking special measures in the respective areas,” he added.

Since the campaign has been launched, police have recovered illegal weapons worth five million rupees. More than 75 persons have been arrested during the campaign after criminal cases were lodged against them, the police officer revealed the details.

On the orders of CCPO Muhammad Amin Wains, the investigation wing of the Lahore police launched a massive crackdown against the illegal firearms.

“We are monitoring this campaign on regular basis and each investigation officer has been assigned a special task for this purpose,” the SSP added.

Several special teams comprising investigators took part in the campaign launched in Chuhng, Badami Bagh, Misri Shah, Shafiqabad, Shahdara, Factory Area, Baghbanpura, Hanjarwal, Manga Mandi, Sherakot, Sattukatla, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal police precincts.

Responding to a question, Ayaz Saleem said that police teams were ordered to further accelerate the campaign against illegal weapons besides ensuring proper investigation of the registered cases. The police are also directed to check the records of weapon dealers located in the respective jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, SSP Ayaz Saleem suspended Sub-Inspector Muhammad Abbas of Mozang police station from service over corruption and mala fide actions.
