The landslide victory of Ali Ahmed Kurd as President of the SCBA is a blow to those who want to protect the present 'status quo judiciary' and do not want rule of law in the country. Unfortunately, a few senior lawyers have  have compromised on the basic principles of justice for the sake of their personal interests. These timeservers were staunch supporters of the military dictatorship as well. Recently, the prestigious Washington publication Foreign Policy has placed Pakistan in the list of potentially 'failed states of the world' citing lack of independent judiciary as the main cause of overall degradation of the Pakistani society. President Asif Ali Zardari has not fulfilled the promises he had made to the nation about restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to pre-Nov 3, 2007 position. It is hoped that the new SCBA will lead the lawyers' movement to achieve this objective during Mr Kurd's tenure. -ENGR S.T. HUSSAIN, Lahore, via e-mail, October 30.
