LAHORE Star batsman Muhammad Yousuf has been named captain of the Pakistan team for the forthcoming New Zealand Test series, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Wednesday. The PCB says that the current captain Younus Khan has asked for a break following a prolonged lack of form that has caused Pakistan cricket great loss. The Pakistan teams loss to New Zealand evoked criticism not only from former cricketers but also from the senior members of the team. Former cricketers did not see any place for Younus in the team while his teammates were angry over his shuffling of the batting order. Sources says Younus flopped batting and his eccentric attitude was not only hurting the Pakistan cricket but was also developing divisions within the team ranks. Pakistan lost the three-match series 2-1 after a narrow seven-run defeat in the final match on Monday. An official of the PCB said that Younus has asked for a break from international cricket for the tour on Wednesday. That is why the board has decided to appoint Yousuf as captain and wicketkeeper, Kamran Akmal as vice captain for the test tour, a Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman said. Pakistan starts the first test of the two-match rubber in New Zealand on November 24. Pakistan will fly from UAE on Sunday to play Tests series in New Zealand. But the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said that the decision of changing the captain has nothing to do with the defeat against New Zealand. Younus has asked for a rest, he added. Butt said he had no objection to Younus seeking a break. We did appoint Younus captain until the 2011 World Cup, subject to his performance and fitness, but we have no objection to him asking for a rest, and I dont think its a turmoil in Pakistan cricket, said Butt. Only recently Younus resigned from captaincy over the National Assembly members allegations of match-fixing but the PCB chairman owning to political pressure rejected his resignation. And Younus came back to continue till 2011 World Cup after his laid out conditions were accepted by the PCB. The 35-year-old Yousuf was not made captain after Inzamamul Haq retired in 2007. But now after consultations with Inzaman, Yousuf has decided to take the job. Yousuf was however, quite angry after he was dropped from the final One-Day International against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi. Yousuf lost his cool after being told he was not playing in the final ODI in Abu Dhabi. Yousuf was stunned when he was told he was being rested for the match by manager Abdul Raquib and coach Intikhab Alam, reports said. Yousuf demanded that instead of coming to him the matter should be discussed openly in the team meeting, the report said. Some reports suggested that some of the senior players had an argument with Younus over the resting of senior players. Similarly, the tour selection committee that includes the captain, coach and chief selector, had also rested Shoaib Malik for the first time, another decision that invited criticism in Pakistani cricket circles. Reports also said that some of the senior players have also approached the PCB chairman to redress their grievances and it was after that meeting that Yousuf was made captain for the second phase of the series. But Younus said he had no personal grudge against anyone. I have taken this decision after giving it serious thoughts, since I am not in the best of form I need rest and there is no personal grudge against anyone, thats for sure, AFP quoted Younus as saying. I want to tell my fans that I am not finished, I will come back. My country comes first, more than my family and more than my self, he said. Yet another wrong decision Former first class cricketer and Lahore region council member Tahir Shah has blamed the wrong decision of taking back the resignation of Younus Khan by PCB chairman Ijaz Butt as the main reason behind the Pakistans defeat against New Zealand. In a statement he said that the political pressure in Younus Khans resignation is another factor of the teams poor showing. Its not only grouping but also the poor performance of Younus is causing the downfall of the game. He should be out of the game and further that he should retire now. He is a tool of Rashid Latif and he being captain till 2011 World Cup is nothing but a stupidity, he added.
