LAHORE - Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslim chief Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri demanded the government and Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone the local bodies’ elections till Rabi-us-Sani for the sake of maximum turnout, as majority of the people would not be able to cast their votes during Muharram, Safar and Rabiul Awal.

He expressed these views while addressing a news conference here on Monday. Other leaders including Allama Syed Mubarak Ali Mosawi, Allama Syed Ali Muhammad Naqvi, Allama Hussnain Arif, Allama Abuzar Mahdavi, Allama Syed Haider Ali Mosavi, Syed Nasir Abbas Sherazi, Allama Syed Hassan Mehdi Kazmi, Allama Syed Hassan Hamdani, Allama Hussain Zakri, Allama Dr Mujtaba Haider Tirmizi and Allama Malik Muhammad Ishfaq Dhako were also present on the occasion.

The MWM strongly condemned the statement of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Syed Munawwar Hassan wherein he had claimed that the militants involved in the killing if innocent people were martyrs.

Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said they would boycott the local bodies’ election if their demands were not met. He also warned the government of a country-wide protest against for committing an unconstitutional action. He said they would also file a writ petition against this illegal act of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Contending over the stance, Nasir Abbas said in fact they were not against holding the LB polls but the circumstances were not in favour of the elections as majority of the citizens would be busy in religious affairs. Many citizens go abroad to visit the holy places during these months, he added. The MWM leaders unanimously called upon the government to postpone the local bodies’ elections.
