ISLAMABAD - Ahsan Butt won the carom while Zulfikar Khan won the table tennis events of the Rawalpindi Islamabad Photo Journalists Association (Ripja) sports gala held at Rawalpindi Press Club on Monday. 

It was the ninth sports gala organised by the Ripja. A total of 70 photo journalists from twin cities participated in it. A committee was also formed to monitor the events. The carom committee was headed by Raja Riaz, while Syed Mehdi and Faisal Khan were the members. Table tennis committee was headed by Zulfikar Khan while Muddasar Raja and Waseem Khan were the members.

In the carom, three were left to fight in the finals. Ahsan Butt was probably the luckiest person as he got three byes till the final passage. Sajjad Qureshi and Rizwan Khan met in the semifinals while Sajjad won the semifinal by a very close 29-22 margin. In the final, Sajjad was leading for majority of games, but Ahsan never lost composure and bounced back to topple three-time defending champion Sajjad by the narrowest 29-28 margin. Rizwan bagged the third position.

In the table tennis semifinals, Zulfikar beat Muddasar Raja 21-13, 21-15, while in the second semifinal, Javed Qureshi beat Muntizer Kazmi 21-15, 21-10. Zulfikar won the final by beating Javed Qureshi 14-21, 21-19, 21-19 while Muntizir Kazmi got the third slot.

MNA and ex-federal minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed was the chief guest on the occasion while Ripja president Sajjad Haider was the guest of honour. Winners of carom and table tennis got Rs 10,000 and trophies while the runners-up received Rs 7000 and trophies and the third position holders got Rs 5000 and trophies.
