KARACHI - At least two persons were injured in an attack on Muharram procession in Surjani area on Monday evening.

According to the reports, some unknown miscreants attacked the procession, opened fire and pelted with stones on the procession participants. The procession was passing through the Khuda Ki Basti area of Surjani Town. The incident caused panic among the participants. Later, they staged protest.

Extra contingent of law enforcers reached the site and control the situation. SHO Ashfaq Baloch said no major incident took place as the police maintained the law and order situation before happening of any untoward incident. He said the people wounded were hit by stones but nobody sustained bullet wounds. The wounded were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital who were later discharged after first aid.

On the other hand, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen condemned the attacks on Azadari procession. Hassan Hashmi, secretary general of the MWM Karachi, said terrorists of outlawed group opened fire and pelted with stones on the procession. “The terrorists and the influential bigwigs are behind all these incidents of terrorism. Case should be registered against them forthwith. The judiciary must give them stringent punishment,” he added.
