Rawalpindi - Sadiqbad police booked an independent candidate for the slot of chairman along with his brother and two others yesterday on the charges of attempted murder and terrorism.

The accused were identified as Raja Nasir Mehfooz, a PML-N leader contesting local government elections from UC-21, Dhoke Kala Khan, as an independent candidate after refusal of tickets by PML-N, his brother Raja Waheed Mehfooz, Awais Butt and Raja Yasir.

According to police, Waheed arrived at election office of his brother at Shamasabad. He fought with a rickshaw driver over parking issue. Later, he started indiscriminate firing injuring the rickshaw driver and a lady namely Abida. A police team headed by SI Majeed reached the scene and took the accused into custody. In the meanwhile, some 50 to 60 supporters of Waheed obtained forceful release of the accused from police.

The rickshaw driver and Abida were shifted to nearby hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

Police on the complaint of SI Majid lodged a case against the accused under sections, 324/24, 7ATA, 186 and 153 of PPC and started raids to arrest the accused. Talking to The Nation, DSP Faisal Salim confirmed the incident saying he had carried out a raid and arrested three persons in this regard. He said that several teams have been constituted to arrest main accused including Nasir and Waheed.

On the other hand, Waheed accused PML-N ex-MNA Muhammad Hanif Abbasi of engineering a plan of firing to teach them a lesson for parting ways from the PML-N and forming an independent group.

Talking to The Nation, he said that police implicated them on behest of Abbasi. He said the rickshaw driver was injured by unknown men during a brawl on Murree Road and the injured also told this to police.

Hanif Abbsi, when contacted, rebuffed the allegations levelled against him by Waheed.
