LAHORE - Jamaat-e-Islami will step up its drive against corruption after Eidul Azha, said Senator Sirajul Haq, so that the masses could get rid of the corrupt rulers.

He was talking to different delegations at Mansoora yesterday. Haq said that the government failed to set up commission on corruption and the Panama leaks. He said it was the government’s responsibility to check corruption and misuse of public money but its attitude showed that the top leadership was least interested in this task.

“Jamaat-e-Islami wants the rulers to complete their five year term but the government’s failure on all fronts proves they (rulers) want to go home soon as they are not giving any importance to the public protests on different issues,” the JI chief held.

Siraj also questioned the performance of Public Accounts Committees, NAB, the Ehtisab Commission, and other institutions “which mostly use to harass the opposition and compel the opposition members to switch over to the government side”. He added, “Whenever, there is a call for opening the case of any government favourite, the state machinery gets upset.

“About 150 files of mega corruption cases are lying with NAB which is keeping mum due to the government pressure.”

The JI amir reiterated his demand that corruption of national assets should be declared terrorism and treachery and all those involved in these crimes be barred from holding any public office for life and their properties should be confiscated.

Siraj said that the head of government was the representative of the people and was supposed to be the custodian of the national interests. But, unfortunately, the present rulers did not fulfill these pre-conditions as they neither enjoyed the public confidence nor the public trusts them with national interests. On the other hand, he alleged, the incumbent rulers were giving preference to their personal interests over national interests.

JI Punjab chief Mian Maqsood Ahmed informed Sirajul Haq about the preparations for a JI sit-in at Faisalabad due on September 29.
