Ehsan Mani was given the charge of task force on the insistence of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, sources at the sports board said on Wednesday.

They further said that Mani, a former cricket player, was reluctant to take charge of the taskforce. The meeting was held under the chair of PM Imran Khan on Tuesday. The Pakistan Sports Board officials briefed the PM on the sports board affairs.

During the briefing, it was told that some former dignitaries were more interested to handle sports affairs in the country, following foreign funds.

The PM, while criticizing a political leader for chairing a sports board, said that he was my classmate in a Lahore college, but never showed interest in sports. The meeting participants said that the main reason was millions of rupees foreign funds. “The PM was surprised to hear,” the source said.

Imran Khan was also told in the meeting that another political leader, close to the former prime minister, had also shown interest in the chairmanship of Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) during the tenure of former government. Imran was surprised to hear about the interference of former federal minister Ahsan Iqbal into the sports affairs. The briefing continued for about 80 minutes.

The PM, during the meeting, openly criticized the poor performance of sports board and the management dealing of financial matters.

Imran insisted a sports official, who showed up late in the meeting, to be punctual now because he has to work for the improvement of sports. The prime minister also hinted some major reshufflings in the Sports Board.
