LAHORE (APP) - Federal Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah Monday urged PML- N and other opposition parties to help government in overcoming energy crisis in the country assuring that their proposals would be implemented. Let us sit together and solve energy crisis. Your voice would be the voice of the government, he said while addressing a business conference at a local hotel here. He said that the next goal of PPP led government was to make the country self-sufficient in the field of energy adding that the people should give the government one year to make the industry go. The minister stressed that the government had inherited the power crisis from the previous regime and the steps were being taken to reduce the deficit to the minimum at the earliest. He said the annual loss to Wapda through power theft was to the tune of Rs 240 Billion adding that projects of 3,000 MW could be started with this amount. The Minister lauded the role of private sector in the development of agro based industry. He lamented fact that the government sector has not worked to its potential during the past 62 years. He said that Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto took revolutionary steps in 1975 for the development of agriculture in the country. Sukkur Research Center was set up on the initiative of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, he said adding that the credit for the research and agriculture goes to the private sector. He said PPP Government was working on the new technology through which more yield could be produced with minimum quantity of water. He said that the government was also entering a pact with China in order to enhance the average cotton yield per acre from 15 maunds to 45 maunds. He said that Pakistan was an agro-based country and the government was aware of water needs of the farmers. He said the PPP government had given boost to the agriculture in a short span of time. He said that efforts were being made to enhance agriculture produce with smaller quantity of water. The minsiter said Pakistan was in dire need of dams to meet its future water needs adding China which had mere 6 dams some five or six years ago,today had over one hundred and fifty dams. Khursheed Shah said PPP government had taken some important decisions. Instead of harping on the controversial issues we have decided to a move ahead, he said adding that Bhasha dam would be built with an estimated amount Rs 40 billion. He said Bhasha dam would be built within a period of ten to twelve years. He said that Bhasha dam would increase the life and capacity of Tarbela dam and it would produce 3500 MW. The Minister said that around 40 new dams would be built in Kashmir, Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. The Minster said that the government has prepared a policy under which the country would be able to produce at least 50,000 MW electricity. About the gas resources he said that 900 million cubic feet reserves of gas have been found in Hyderabad. However,he said, due to litigation it was not being tapped adding it would be used once the court vacates the stay. The Minister also said that people will have to work for the load management adding 2,000 MW electricity could be saved by closing the shops at 6 oclock. The Minister said that PPP Government preferred peoples interest to their own. He said the vision of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had made the defense of Pakistan impregnable. Talking about the opposition to Pakhtunkhwah, he said Pakistan can never make progress until we promote nationalism among us. The Minister said the nationalism was the need of the hour adding the country could not make progress as long as we are divided as Sindhis, Balochis, Punjabi and Saraiki. Stating that the provinces and the nation had been empowered through the 18th amendment,he said, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani was the first premier of the coutnry who had delegated his powers to the people. Similarly, President had also sacrificed his powers in order to strengthen democracy and the parliament whereas the dictators like Musharaf and Zia-ul-Haq amassed all power in thier hands. Lauding the achievements of the PPP led Government, he said the democratic government managed to pass NFC Award which a dictators could not do in 12 years. He said water, power and corn are interlinked and these cannot be separated from one another. He said everybody gets annoyed with the PPP government but PPP led government would get Pakistan out of crisis with the public support. He urged the intellectuals to expose those who were hatching conspiracies against the government. Later, talking to the media men about the 18th amendment, he said the bill had been passed by the Nation Assembly adding there are some people who may take the matter to the Supreme Court. To a question regarding NRO, he said that the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani had implemented the NRO. And the resignation of the Attorney General may have been cause by the differences with the Law Minister. To a query about the differences among the provinces on water issue, he said 1991 water accord was the best solution to the problem. About the Prime Ministers US visit, he said the US considered Pakistan as true friend adding that Pak-US relationship could only work on basis of equality. About loadshedding Shah said the nation needed to be patient. He assured the masses that 70 percent of loadshedding would be overcome by 2011.
