Swat - Preparations for the Local Bodies elections scheduled on May 30 were in full swing in Swat. Political parties and independent candidates were holding corner meetings and door-to door campaign to drum up support of masses. District Swat consists of 7 tehsils and 67 union councils. At present, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) are seemed more active as compared to other political parties. They have also formed committees to make contacts with masses for mustering support. The Qaumi Watan Party will soon announce its candidates while no activity has been seemed on the part of Jamaat Islami as its former district president Mohammad Amin who was candidate for PK-80 is not interested in Local Bodies election. Pakistan People’s Party and Jamiat UIema-e-Islam (JUI) were also searching for strong candidates in the area. Besides political parties, independent candidates also expedited their campaign on the social media.

Former Minister KP Wajid Ali Khan while talking to The Nation said that Awami National Party (ANP) is taking active part in Local Bodies elections and it will field candidates from every tehsil. He said that they have finalised candidates’ names of 7 tehsils which will be made public soon.

QWP Malakand Zone Chairman Fazal Rehman said, “We have formed committees for running election campaign in the city.” He said that QWP will struggle hard to win the Local Bodies elections.

Sources said that PML-N would field a member of Royal Family Shaharyar Amir Zeb for the position of district Mayer. Shaharyar would contest district counselor election from Saidu Sharif. JUI local leader Habib Ali Shah hoped that JUI will sweep the local government polls.
