KARACHI - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Saturday approved that present subsidised rate of Rs975 per 40kg would be continued and in case of increase of wheat price in the market, the subsidised rate may be enhanced in consultation with the Finance Department. Presiding a meeting regarding releases of wheat crop-2011 at Chief Minister House, he also directed the Revenue and Food Department to properly monitor process of distribution of flour being provided to poor people on concessional rate of Rs 21 per kg during the holy month of Ramazan, as there are complaints that flour is not being provided properly to the poor. Sindh Food Minister and Sindh Secretary Food in their presentation informed the CM that the provincial food department has almost achieved its target of wheat procurement, and as on June 30, 2011, the department has procured 1.403 million metric tons of wheat against the target of 1.500 MMT. They informed that the department has 1.523 MMT wheat stocks, which are sufficient for the province to cater the annual requirement. The chakky owners of Hyderabad region have also demanded the releases of wheat in the district, due to high price of wheat in the open market, they added. They further said that the government was expected to sustain a loss ranging Rs 4,058.870 million on the stocks of 1.200 MMT depending upon the market rates which are however, fluctuating. The loss shall have to be borne by the provincial government, they said. They further added that wheat is a perishable commodity and due to infestation, deterioration and prolong storage loosing its quality and quantity. Under the circumstances mentioned above and in order to bring stability to the market, they proposed that existing issue price may be implemented from July 2011 onward. However, any increase in price definitely will increase in atta price in the province, they said. Moreover, the CM distributed compensation cheques to legal heirs of those who died or injured in the collapse of 5-storey Kasr-e-Ruqayya building in Moosa Lane, Lyari on August 4, 2011, at Chief Minister House. Qaim assured that the affected people will be looked after by the government. DCO Karachi informed that 32 people were killed and 14 injured in the incident. The chief minister distributed compensation cheques to Sultan, Muhammad Siddique, Muhammad Hussain, Yaseem Farooq (for four victims), Muhammad Yousuf son of Kara, Muhammad Yousif son of M Hussain (for two victims), Muhammad Hanif, Abdul Ghafoor (for two victims) Abdul Aziz and Faisal. The CM also met each recipient and inquired about their problems. The remaining compensation cheques were distributed by MPA Saleem Hingoro among legal heirs of 22 deceased and 10 injured persons at the office of DCO.
