Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas have been confirmed for the cast of The Expendables 3.

Sylvester Stallone had previously dropped hints that the Mad Max star and the Desperado actor were joining the action film franchise, but now Deadline.com has confirmed they are on board.

It follows the news that Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford, 71, will appear in the next instalment of the movie about ageing mercenaries. He announced the news on Twitter, revealing Ford would replace Bruce Willis, and hinted there had been some contention with Willis over his contract. He previously tweeted: “Mad Max Vs. Barney Ross”, using a reference to Gibson’s famous action hero character to hint that he would be the villain in this franchise. He later teased Banderas with “Antonio B? Could be.”

Sly, who directed the first film and has scripted the franchise, will return as Barney Ross alongside Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mickey Rourke.

Jackie Chan has also been added to the line-up. The Expendables 3, directed by Patrick Hughes, is due out in August 2014.
