LAHORE - The government is considering sacking around 500 teachers of Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Education Wing hired in the PPP era without keeping in mind the need of the educational institutions run by the board, sources told The Nation.
Some 570 contractual teachers had been hired for its five institutions including Ayesha Siddiqa Degree College, Railway Station Lahore, Nawaz Sharif High School, Railway Station, Trust Model Public High School, Maulana Ahmad Ali Road, Ravi Road Lahore, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Higher Secondary Girls School and Dr Mateen Fatima Higher Secondary School, Shahdara.
Moreover, around two hundred 89-day contractual teaching and non-teaching staff had also been hired in the PPP era for the said institutions. The new government had fired these 89-day contractual teaching and non-teaching staff short after coming in power.
Although, the educational institutions were over employed as a teacher told this scribe but firing all the teachers would disturb the study of the thousands of students of these institutions.
The teacher, requesting anonymity, was of the view that both the teaching and non-teaching staff were more than the need. But, he said, the government should adjust them in other federal or provincial government schools instead of sacking them. He said the government should scrutinize the teachers and if it finds some of them ineligible, it should sack them.
The education wing of the ETP Board was started in 1994 under the banner of Pakistan Model School Foundation which was funded by the board. It had been merged at least three times with ETP board since its establishment.
But the various successor governments had been separating it in their regimes just because of political rivalry. In 2012, Syed Asif Hashmi, the then chairman ETP board merged these educational institutions with the board on January 23 but the PML-N government again separated it on June 04, 2013 by canceling the merger.
The teachers who had been serving in these institutions for many years still have the status of contractures. Various governments had been promising to get them regularized but they did not do so. The new government also stopped their salaries. After protests and sit-ins, the acting chairman Riaz Chaudhary of the board released one month salary of the teachers before Eid and the salaries of the teachers of two months are still pending.
