I am an avid star-gazer and keep a close watch on the sky. The Eid Moon sighting every year creates excitement as well as tensions in Pakistan. I just wanted to share some information. On July 28 after Iftari, I saw a digital image of the Sun and Moon in GPS lock position. In spite of a cloud cover one could easily see, with today’s technology that the moon was also visible in Lahore, though it was a very young moon!

I can show the pictures and the exact time and position. I wonder why the Pakistan Ruet-e-Hilal Committee cannot make use of sophisticated software and telescopes which I did on that day and remove the controversial two Eids phenomenon. This is what most Islamic countries do now including Saudi Arabia. And there is no reason why we shouldn’t do the same.

SYED NABEEL HASHMI,
