The death of a three years old child at the Doctors' Hospital due to gross negligence of the administration and doctors has opened eyes of the government and the public. The inquiry commission has already submitted its report and the pharmacy of the hospital has been sealed as the same was found to be selling banned and expired medicines. Some medicines that had been clearly prescribed to be kept in refrigeration were lying on the pharmacy counter. It is very important to bring it to the notice of the Chief Minister and the inquiry commission he has instituted that the internal rules laid down by the owners/administration of inducting doctors as consultants were very arbitrary to the point of being abusive. I was shocked to hear from a friend of mine (who is a doctor himself but is not working in this hospital) that the induction of a senior consultant is done by offering him a certain number of shares. That makes some sense to me as a businessman and distributor of various consumer goods companies as all privately run business benefit from having working directors with personal stakes in the company. But what made me shiver was the fact that every consultant is given a monthly target to generate a specific mount of revenue if he wanted to get his cheque at the end of the month. This is like they were selling consumer products like soap, cigarettes, edible oil or tele-cards. -M. ALI RIAZ, Lahore, December 10.
