SYDNEY, Australia (AFP) - Veteran leader Sir Michael Somare was reinstated as Papua New Guineas prime minister Monday when the Supreme Court ruled the election of Peter ONeill was unconstitutional, his spokeswoman said. In a narrow 3-2 decision, the court found there was no vacancy in the office of prime minister on August 2 when ONeill took office, and rendered the decision illegal. The court has already decided that he is restored as prime minister, Somares daughter and spokeswoman Betha Somare told AFP via telephone. He is grateful to the judiciary for once again upholding the constitution. Somare, 75, had been in Singapore undergoing heart surgery when he was deposed by a majority vote of lawmakers.
