JCR-VIS reaffirms IFS rating of Premier Insurance
KARACHI (PR): JCR-VIS Credit Rating Company Limited (JCR-VIS) has reaffirmed the Insurer Financial Strength (IFS) rating of Premier Insurance Limited (PIL) at ‘A’ (Single A). Outlook on the rating is ‘Stable’.
The assigned rating draws strength from the company’s large equity base. Over the years, the company has built a sizeable investment portfolio, a major portion of which is deployed in cash/income funds, providing both a source of earnings and liquidity. In recent years, the company’s focus has been on augmenting the premium levels; business mix remains diversified with motor comprising around 1/5th of total premium.  Pressure on underwriting results persists on account of adverse claims experience and higher retention on net account that has eventually trickled down to the bottom line.
Despite strong investment income support, claims incurred and provisioning against outstanding receivables led to a net loss during 9M13. PIL’s large equity base provides cushion to absorb losses; the underwriting strategy may nevertheless need to be revisited to improve claims ratio. The company is making on-going efforts to curtail expense ratio through staff cost rationalization. Management expects underwriting results to improve in the coming year.
