Islamabad - The National Vocational and Technical Training Commission has floated the idea for establishing technical skills centers on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor route with the help of the Chinese government.
The suggestion came at a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training chaired by Senator Rahila Malik. The committee discussed the performance, role and the function of the NAVTTC in providing technical education.
NAVTTC Director General Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema told the committee that NAVTTC has established training centres in a number of cities to provide technical training to the youth. He said that the centres were providing training in specific fields where industries are set up. “In Sialkot, training is being provided to the youth in sports and surgical industry while in Gujrat, in the furniture industry,” he said.
He also said that the introduction of competition has helped in creating encouraging atmosphere and motivated the youth to be part of the vocational training.
He also told the committee that children dropout ratio in TVET institutions was higher than conventional schools.
The NAVTTC DG said that recently around 400,000 students applied for admission to technical and vocational courses against vacancies of 100,000.
Two Pakistani students have also won medals in a competition held recently in China in the field of welding, he said.
“We will not compromise on the quality of education and the institutions that down not meet the set standard would be shut down,” he said. Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak said that the condition of matriculation for getting admission to a technical institute should be abolished. The senate body recommended for approval the NAVTTC demand of establishing technical skills centres and suggested that these centres should be established in those industrial zones situated on the CPEC route.
The committee meeting was also attended by senators Sehar Kamran, Mushahid Hussain Syed and Minister for Education Muhammad Baligh-ur Rahman.
