LAHORE The 110th annual sports of the Government College University Lahore Friday kicked off at an opening ceremony at Punjab Stadium. The ceremony began with a grand march past was attended by hundreds of students, university faculty members and old Ravians. All the university departments and institutes took part in the march past. GCU History Department bagged the prestigious trophy of Best March Past Contingent while GCU Institute of Biotechnology stood second. The GCU athletes also took oath that they will take part in annual games abiding by the rules and in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sport and the honour of their teams. The sports event was marked by 800 meters race, 100 Meters Race, Long Jump Shot Put, 100 Meter Hurdle, 100 Meters (Girls), High Jump, Javelin Throw, 200 Meters (Heats) and 4x100 Relay for intermediate students. The main event of the day was 3000 meters race in which top eight GCU athletes took part. Zeeshan Akram bagged the first position by covering the distance in 10:37:81 seconds. Altaf Hussain of Political Science Department broke the previous GCU records in Javelin Throw by covering the distance of 64.86 meters. In his message on the annual sports, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab said sports make a person better, adding that it teaches tolerance and encourages the spirit of competitiveness. He advised the university students to never compromise on the standards of sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is more important than wining an event, Dr Khalid Aftab said. He appreciated the participation of students in annual sports and congratulated the winner sportsmen of the competitions held at the opening ceremony. The athletics events of 5000 meters, 1500 meters, 400 meters, 200 meters, Triple Jump, and Pole vault will be held at Punjab Stadium today (Saturday). However, the most enthralling Gymkhana events which include Ministerial Staff Race, Naib Qasid Race, Four Legged Race, Cricket Throw Ball for Girls, Pillow Fighting, Staff Children Race, Stilt Race, 60 Meter Race, Sack Race, Chatti Race for Girls and Obstacle Race will be held at the closing ceremony to be held at GCU Oval Ground tomorrow (Sunday).
