LAHORE (ASHRAF JAVED ) – Four children of a family burnt alive when a wooden cottage, they were residing in, caught fire in the Sabzazar police area on Tuesday night, rescue workers said.

“The fire erupted in the hut after a burning candle fell on the quilt. The kids were sleeping in the hut after lighting a candle during the loadshedding,” said Station House Officer (SHO) Sabzazar police station, Inspector Husnain Haider, when contacted.

However, an official of the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue-1122) claimed that the cause of the fire was a burning stove that was left unattended.

The parents, said to be labourers, were at work in the same locality when the incident took place. Rescue workers said that they recovered partially-charred bodies of all the four children from the hut temporarily built in an empty-plot in (Q-block) near the Sabzazar police station.

Muhammad Yasin, a poor  worker, was residing in the hut along with his wife and four children for the last couple of years, according to the locals.

The deceased were identified as 10-year-old Asif, his younger sisters Nagina and Farzana, and  two-year-old Qasim.

Police said that Yasin and his wife had left for work in the afternoon and did not return. The children were sleeping in the small house alone when all of a sudden it caught fire, which engulfed the entire hut within no time.

Some local residents watched the burning hut and disclosed the happening to the fire fighters. The locals also tried to put out the fire by throwing water on it. The fire was almost controlled when the firefighters reached the spot. The rescuers recovered all the four children dead from the wreckage,” Ahmed Khan, a resident of the Q-block told reporters at the site.

Many emotional scenes were seen when the ill-fated parents arrived back. The poor mother, who works as maid, broke into tears after witnessing the charred bodies.

The police also reached the spot and handed over the dead bodies to the parents after fulfilling legal requirements.

Accident: A 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed when a heavy trailer smashed into his two-wheeler at GT Road in the Shahdara Town police area on Tuesday.

The man, unidentified so far, died on the spot. The police have arrested the driver and are investigating.

Separately, a 42-year-old man was crushed to death by a rashly-driven bus in the Liaqatabad police area .

The deceased, identified as Ashraf Masih, was on his way home when a recklessly driven bus ran over him on  the Peco Road.

Suicide: A mother of five children committed suicide by consuming poisonous pills in the Iqbal Town area, police said on Tuesday.  Resident of Behkay Wal Morre, Kalsoom Bibi, exchanged harsh words with her daughter over a domestic issue and later took poisonous pills. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she died. The police handed over the body to the family without autopsy.
