ISLAMABAD - The National Assembly on Monday passed a resolution recognizing the services of human rights activist and senior lawyer Asma Jehangir for democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism.

The resolution moved by Pakistan People’s Party lawmaker Syed Naveed Qamar also acknowledged her brave struggle for oppressed segments of society and against rights abuses.

“Asma Jehangir defended the rights of the voiceless, the poor, the downtrodden and dispossessed and spoke out for the victims of violence and against discrimination on the basis of gender and religion,” said the unanimously passed resolution.

Paying tributes to the struggle of Asma Jehangir , it said that being elected representatives, “the parliamentarians are committed to protecting and upholding fundamental human rights”.

The lawmakers from both sides of the aisle paying rich tribute to the late Asma Jehangir lauded her efforts for the oppressed segments of the society.

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif lauded the struggle of Asma Jehangir for democracy saying: “She raised her voice in a difficult time for the continuation of the democratic process. She defended the rights of the downtrodden and bravely spoke out for the victims of violence and against discrimination on the basis of gender and religion.

Naveed Qamar said that the struggle of the brave Asma Jehangir for the rights of the marginalized segment of society was remarkable.

PPP’s Ghulam Mustafa said that state funeral should be held for the late Asma Jehangir . Other lawmakers said that Asma Jahangir’s struggle for the cause of human rights was unforgettable.
