Punjab Cabinet expansion this month

LAHORE - The PML-N has asked its coalition partner PPP to recommend names for their appointment as Punjab ministers, as the expansion in the provincial cabinet will be done in the current month. Senior Minister and Parliamentary leader PPP at the Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz Ahmed told this to the media at a briefing held here on Monday at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, which was held after the Cabinet meeting chaired by CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif. Senior Advisor to CM Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Minister Law and Parliamentary Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan, Minister Finance Tanveer Ashraf Kaira and Minister Local Government and Community Development Department Sardar Dost Khan Khosa. On this occasion, Raja Riaz has also said if Governor Punjab objects to anything, the PPP seriously takes notice of that. "The PPP has sent a list of parliamentary secretaries to the CM, while the list of the expected provincial ministers is also being finalised. The Punjab government is serving the masses well," he added quickly. He retorted to Sardar Zulfiqar's statement that CM was not answerable to the Governor, but to the Cabinet and Punjab Assembly, as Governor was a representative of the federal government. In this context, Rana Sanaullah also added that there existed no connection between the PML-N and the PPP at the organisational level. "Our coalition is at the government level, and we are in constant contact with the PPP team at the Punjab Assembly," he said. According to Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa, the government has decided to give bonus to police officials of the rank of constables to ASI equal to their one month's salary for making excellent security arrangement and maintaining law and order in the province during Muharram-ul-Harram. The provincial Cabinet gave approval for setting up an institute of cardiology in Balochistan at a cost of Rs 1.25 billion. The Balochistan government has allocated 24 acres of land adjacent to Bolan Medical College for this purpose. On behalf of Punjab government, teams of experts will start training of doctors and paramedical staff of Balochistan as well as setting up of operation theatres timely so that the process of provision of medical facilities could be started immediately after the completion of the building. The project also includes construction of the building of the institute, residences of staff as well as provision of medical equipment. "This project is a beautiful gesture of goodwill for the people of Balochistan by the government and people of Punjab," he added. Secondly, a 5-member committee, headed by Sardar Zulfiqar, has been constituted to curb corruption in district governments and Town Municipal Administrations. The committee will identify corruption as well as suggest measures to check irregularities in future and submit its report within four weeks. Raja Riaz, Rana Sana and Sardar Dost are its members. The Cabinet, taking notice of corruption in the awarding of government contracts and delay in their execution as a result of connivance between government officials and contractors, the committee was constituted. The committee will submit its recommendations impartially and with politically will regarding accountability of district governments and Tehsil Municipal Administrations. The Chairman Punjab Public Service Commission for the year 2007 was also presented in the meeting. The cabinet members submitted their proposals for checking delay in the selection of suitable candidates as well as capacity-building of the commission. Keeping in view the importance of the matter, the Chief Minister decided to constitute a cabinet committee for this purpose, which will review all aspects in this regard and submit its recommendations to the government within a few days. Sardar Zulfiqar said that Shahbaz Sharif suggested awarding of bonus to police official of the rank of constable to ASIs of the police department and his proposal was unanimously supported by the cabinet. The Chief Minister also appreciated the active role of Ulema for maintaining sectarian harmony during Muharram-ul-Harram. He also appreciated the efforts of Ministers who supervised the arrangements for Muharram, cabinet committee and government officers for ensuring calm and tranquillity during Muharram. About the recent recruitment in the police department, Sardar Zulfiqar informed that a transparent system was adopted for this purpose. He also told the media that the Cabinet would meet every month, besides holding meetings on important issues. The provincial ministers observed that there was a complete harmony between the coalition partners.
