Christians protest Swiss minaret ban

ISLAMABAD - Christian Progressive Movement (CPM) staged a protest demonstration before the National Press Club against the Swiss governments decision to ban minarets at mosques, here on Tuesday. The rally of CPM began from Parliament House and culminated at the National Press Club. The participants of the rally were holding placards inscribed with slogans like 'Ban on Minarets Na-Manzoor, 'Shame Shame and they also chanted same slogans. Addressing the gathering, Chairperson CPM Naila J Dayal said that the decision of Switzerland was condemnable and shameful. She said that it was the fundamental right of the minority to enjoy its religious freedom anywhere in the world. She said that it was high time for all of us to stand firm and with unity against this cruel decision. She asked the rulers and other influential Pakistanis to withdraw their money from the banks of Switzerland to realise this blunder to the world. She also quoted some examples of the Muslim rulers great respect for minorities in the past. Naila termed the decision as grass violation of basic human rights. She alleged that the Jewish lobby was behind this heinous exercise, adding that the aforementioned lobby wants conflict between Muslims and Christians for its vested interests. She demanded of the Government to take up this issue on diplomatic level to realise the world body (UNO) against such malpractices of the big powers. Convenor World Council for Islamic Civilization and Culture Abu Bakr Sidique said that criminal negligence of the rulers over such issue was not understandable, adding that it was necessary for the Government to call the Switzerland Ambassador and register a strong protest. Kamran Bhatti, Saqib Malik, Mehnaz Arfan and Nouman Chohan of CPM also addressed the rally and expressed their severe reservations over the said step taken by a European country.
