LAHORE Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property of people is the top priority of the government and all out resources are being utilised for this purpose. Nothing can be more important in the present circumstances than maintenance of a peaceful atmosphere, and despite limited resources, salaries of Police have been enhanced substantially so that it can perform its duties with complete peace of mind, he said, while presiding over a high level meeting to review law and order situation and performance of Elite Force at the CMs Secretariat here on Wednesday. Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, MPA Colonel (R) Shuja Khanzada, Advisor Jehanzeb Barki, Chief Secretary, IGP, Home Secretary, Additional IG Elite Force, Commandant Elite Force and other officers senior were present. Addressing the meeting, the CM was of the view the Elite Force was established for curbing terrorism and heinous crimes, but later it was assigned various responsibilities due to which its performance was adversely affected. Issuing instructions for setting up of a committee for using Elite Force for the actual objectives of its establishment and further improving its efficiency, the CM directed the committee to submit a report after reviewing implementation of the decisions taken during the last three years in this regard. He said despite enhancement of salaries of police the desired results had not been achieved. He mentioned that additional burden of Rs 8 billion was borne as a result of increase in the salaries of Police with the hope that there would be a change in Thana Culture. Police have been given additional resources and now it is its responsibility to show results, he asked. He directed that basic training for police officers as well as officials at the Elite Training School should be declared mandatory, and Inspectors, DSPs ASPs and SPs should also be included in the training programme so that they could perform their responsibilities efficiently during their period of posting in different districts. Direct recruitment of Inspectors and DSPs through the Punjab Public Service Commission should also be considered and recommendations should be submitted to me in this regard, he asked. The CM described the briefing given with regard to improving efficiency of the Elite Force as comprehensive, and said the committee should submit its recommendations as early as possible keeping in view all aspects. He appreciated the newly-appointed Inspector General Police Javed Iqbal, and said he was a hard working, honest and competent officer.
