LAHORE The police investigators still appear to be groping in the dark over the killings of Supreme Court judge Justice Javed Iqbals parents, who were found suffocated in their Cavalry Ground residence in the highly-guarded Cantonment area late on Tuesday night. Sources close to the investigators revealed Wednesday that Malik Abdul Hameed and his second wife Zarina Bibi was murdered in cold blood and apparently it was a pre-planned. Gold ornaments, including earrings and bangles worth Rs300,000 were missing from the crime scene. We have registered a dacoity-cum-murder case against unidentified killers under sections 302 and 392 of the PPC on the complaint of Saeed Ahmed, retired army officer and brother of Justice Javed Iqbal, replied the on-duty official at the Factory Area Police Station, when contacted. The autopsy report suggested that the killers tortured the old couple and later suffocated them to death as there were visible torture marks on their bodies. It seemed that former DIG police Malik Abdul Hameed and his spouse offered resistance when the attackers, said to be four to five, overpowered them to commit house robbery in the posh locality. The newly-appointed Inspector General of Police Punjab Javed Iqbal after visiting the crime scene told reporters that the incident appeared to dacoity-cum-double murder. However, the investigators were yet to establish the motive behind the gruesome killings till filing of this report. Zarina Bibi, 65, had been residing along with Malik in the lower portion of their Cavalry Ground residence for the last 15 years while two workingwomen were residing on the upper portion on rent since 2008. Local residents said the elderly couple was caring and loving towards their neighbours. Malik Hameed, 75, and his wife were lying dead upside down on the floor in the TV Lounge when one of their tenants came downstairs and disclosed the happening to the police at about 7:20 pm. The autopsy report indicated that couple died around 4:30 pm. Police have nabbed four persons and are interrogating them. SP (Investigations) Cantonment Ameen Bokhari said two housemaids and as many street guards had been taken into custody. We are investigating the security guard Baba Fateh Mohammad, he added. According to the police sources, except gold ornaments, other valuables were placed at their original places. A Joint Investigation Team (JIT), comprising top officials of security and intelligence agencies, is also investigating the case. The JIT will submit its final report to the quarters concerned within a couple days. Capital City Police Chief Mohammad Aslam Tareen, when contacted, said the police were investigating the matter keeping in view all aspects but were still clueless. We are investigating the case and hopefully the double murder mystery will be resolved soon, he claimed. The gruesome high-profile murders become talk of the town on Wednesday as many people considered it as an act of targeted attack, saying Justice Javed Iqbal is hearing the missing persons case. However, the police could not find any clue in this regard so far. Soon after the couple was found suffocated, a five-member special team of a newly-established Forensic Science Laboratory rushed to crime scene and collected evidences to find out the motives and modus operandi of the killers. We have collected dozens of samples from the crime scene. After examining these articles, we will submit our report to the investigators, one of the forensic experts said.
