LAHORE – With the start of the New Year, the City is witnessing a terrible trend in the incidents of crimes as the police seem unable to tackle the criminals involved in street crimes in the provincial metropolis.

Robbers riding on motorcycles shot dead three persons and wounded seven others on putting up resistance during armed robberies in different parts of the metropolis during the last week. The police are yet to make any break thorough as far as the killings in house and road robberies are concerned.

Last week also witnessed a considerable surge in the robberies as bandits stepped up armed raids and struck the City more than 200 times successfully. More than 45 cars and 80 motorcycles are either snatched or stolen away from different parts of the City since January 1, 2013. It also seemed that the police are helplessly watching the entire situation like silent spectator in the City.

The bandits are striking brazenly across the provincial capital while targeting residences even in the posh and highly-guarded localities apart from depriving motorists, families and even ordinary passersby of their belongings.

Apart from street crimes, the posh neighborhood especially Model Town, Gulberg, Defense and Johar Town have virtually emerged as hub of social crimes like brothels business and drug peddling.

According to insiders, right from the Station House Officers (SHOs) to the divisional police officers all are paid their ‘share’ by those running ‘rest-houses’ in the posh localities. The business of brothels, gambling dens and narcotics selling is on the rise in many parts of the City particularly in the posh areas. Iqbal Town Police division is said to be the safe heaven for robbers and those running brothels, thanks to the police for patronizing such criminals.

Many of the guesthouses and hotels located in the posh localities have turned into prostitution dens where the clients are also served liquor and narcotics. The police launch clamp down on those involved in social crimes once they deny share to them.

Defense, Gulberg and Johar Town are the areas, where many of the guesthouses are running the brothel business. Interestingly, the ‘organizers’ have set up such facility in the rented residences in connivance with the police.

According to the police sources, some 100,000 accused declared as Proclaimed Offenders in different cases are still at large in the Punjab. More than 50,000 POs are wanted in various criminal cases only in Lahore. Legal experts believe that most of the accused are acquitted from the courts due to poor investigations as the investigators fail to provide evidences against them due to one or another reason. However, police investigators say they are overburdened.

Robbers gunned down a 40-year-old trader in the Samanabad police precincts late on Tuesday night. A few hours later, an employee at a medical store was shot dead by dacoits on offering resistance in the Baghbanpura police area. A teenage schoolboy was shot dead by bandits during an armed robbery at the doorstep of his residence in the precincts of Factory Area, police confirmed on Wednesday. The police investigators have failed to arrest or trace any of the gangsters involved in the above-mentioned deadly raids, which virtually has shattered the confidence of the people on the streets in Lahore.
