Pakistan’s history has many dark days and another has been added, January 9, 2014 when brave SP CID Chaudhry Aslam was martyred by TTP in Karachi. This was another big blow not only for Karachi Police but for the whole nation, we all lost a man who believed in peaceful Pakistan and sacrificed his life for it. It was only a fortnight ago when my 21 year old son told me with great excitement that he saw SP CID Chaudhry Aslam from close range. He was waiting for the bus near Anklesaria Hospital when the convoy of SP CID passed. Chaudhry Aslam clad in white shalwar-qameez was sitting next to the driver in the front seat.

While telling me all this, my son was a little worried for the very little security he was traveling with. Only two police mobiles were with Chaudhry Aslam. Whether it was bravery or carelessness of administration or conspiracy of some black sheep to make him a soft target, will be proved in the days to come, but losing a man like Chaudhry Aslam is a great loss for every member of Karachi Police. My heart cried when I saw a Karachi policeman on television saying he feels orphaned by the passing away of Chaudhry Aslam. We salute you SP CID for all the protection you provided to the Karachites till your last breath.

M. RAFIQUE ZAKARIA,
