LAHORE  - Hundreds of police commandoes equipped with automatic weapons are deployed around elite educational institutions in the provincial metropolis, police sources said on Monday.

Also, at least 5,000 private security guards are deployed on security duties at the entry points of leading schools and colleges, days after they completed training courses at the police head quarters in Lahore.

A police officer said that at least 200 police commandoes were deployed in the Cantonment police division, 66 in Model Town division, 51 in Iqbal Town division, and 37 in the City police division.  Security and law enforcement agencies are put on high-alert in Lahore where more than 348 schools are declared as sensitive and at least 23 are declared as most sensitive. The Quick Response Force (QRF) - a well-trained wing of the Punjab police - has been tasked to provide security cover to the educational institutions. The (QRF) commandoes will remain on their toes during the school timing. In case of any untoward incident, they will respond as quickly as possible, officials said.

Recently, the Lahore police approved the security arrangements at the schools, which are divided into three categories – A+, A, B for security purposes.

The management of all the private and public schools is bound to take security measurers as per the SOP lay down for the security of educational institutions.

According to the SOP, there should be complete boundary wall for every school in addition to metal detectors, security guard, security barriers, walkthrough gates, and evacuation point. Following the deadliest terror attack at the army-run school in Peshawar last month, the educational institutions were closed down across the country. The schools were reopened on Monday amid tightened security.
