Rawalpindi - Zulfiqar Ali, who was convicted of US Consulate Karachi attack case, would be hanged at Adyala Jail today (Tuesday) at 6:30am, reliable sources confided to The Nation on Monday.

Sources added that the jail authorities had received the death warrants and a meeting of relatives with the convict had also been arranged within the jail. “Zulfiqar’s mother, two sisters and brothers-in-law have met him in Adyala Jail,” sources informed.

Sources said that the security in the city as well as around jail had been put on high alert by deputing personnel of Rangers, Elite Force and police to avert any untoward incident.

“It will be the second execution in Adyala Jail since Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has lifted moratorium on execution after a terrorist attack on a school in Peshawar,” sources asserted.

On the other hand, an official of Adyala Jail when contacted by this scribe said that it was not clear whether or not the convict would be hanged.

He said that jail authorities had yet not received black warrants for Zulfiqar Ali.

On a query about the meeting between Zulfiqar and his relatives, the official replied that he had no knowledge in that regard as he arrived for duty in the evening whereas the meeting time ended at 04:00pm.

Superintendent Adyala Jail Malik Mushtaq Ahmed Awan was not available for his comments.

However, the sources confirmed that Zulfiqar Ali would be sent to gallows in the morning (Tuesday).

Zulfiqar Ali, a resident of Naval Colony, Karachi, was arrested by law-enforcement agencies in connection with a brazen armed attack launched by unknown motorcyclists on US Consulate in Karachi on February 28, 2003, killing two police officers and injuring six others.

A military court awarded him capital punishment and he was shifted to Adyala Jail on November 3, 2014.

Moreover, Zulfiqar Ali’s mercy appeal was pending with President of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, an anti-terrorism court has decided to conduct trial in Benazir Bhutto murder case on daily basis.

Special ATC Judge Pervaiz Ismail Joya on Monday took up BB murder case and decided to hear the case on daily basis.

The court deferred the hearing till today (Tuesday) because of engagement of FIA Special Public Prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar in high court and non-compliance of summons by prosecution witnesses.

In jail trial, all the five accused including former CPO Syed Saud Aziz former SP Khurram Shehzad were present in courtroom.
