3 injured in anti encroachment drive

KARACHI - Three people including a police inspector were injured during an anti-encroachment drive in Surjani Town on Friday.

Police officials said that the situation turned violent when a KDA official reached the Saiful Marri Goth located in Surjani Town during an anti-encroachment drive, adding that residents of the Goth came out of their homes and started staging protest against the encroachment drive.

Police officials said that two residents of the Goth were wounded during a clash after unidentified persons resorted to indiscriminate fire during the protest and scuffle. The injured persons were identified as Ali Raza and Yousuf.

Later, more contingent of the police reached the site. Police officials said that ASI Zulfiqar was also wounded when the crowd of the people attacked the police with pelting stones, adding that the police used force to disperse the protesters.

Chanting slogans against the police and officials of KDA, the protesters alleged that the same KDA officials and policemen were among the beneficiaries making money against the each house development.

They said that KDA officials were providing the fake shifting files while police provide NOC against the fixed amount of rupees fifty thousand before construction of each house. Protesters said that police, KMC and KDA officials were responsible for houses constructed on illegal lands.   Police officials said that the encroachment drive was halted following the incident. No arrest has been made and no case was registered.
