We are witnessing the evolvement of a virtual presidential system in our country. President Asif Ali Zardari is globe-trotting to sign crucial agreements and MOUs with foreign governments. His recent foray into Beijing with the Chinese government were a superb diplomatic effort, deals closed with a captivating smile. It appears, though, that there is no role for our so-called 'chief executive of the country in anything. Prime Minister Gilani is simply there to don expensive designer suits to go hither-thither in extremely hot and humid weather toowhich merely reinforce the impression that he is, what they call, a 'Darshani Pehlwan in our domestic parlance. It is advisable that charge of the chief executive is also handed over to the efficient Mr President. With his young children by his side on all foreign tours, he presents the image of a great statesman. Our poor country cannot bear the overload of expenditure on maintaining two separate ivory towers, one for President, other for his PM, especially as the twin functions can be so superbly performed by the President alone. -DR M.
