ISLAMABAD Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and the newly appointed NATO/ISAF commander for Afghanistan Gen David Petraeus met on Monday and exchanged matters of professional interest and expressed their satisfaction over the pace of cooperation between the two forces. Diplomatic and military sources informed TheNation that both the military leaders vowed to continue cooperation between the two forces for stability and peace in the region. Sources said that the two commanders exchanged views over the prevailing conditions in Afghanistan and the ongoing operations against militants inside Pakistan. During the meeting, Gen Kayani made it clear to the visiting US commander that Pakistan wanted peace and stability in the region and would fully cooperate in that regard. Gen Petraeus said that for effective operations and success against militants in Afghanistan, Pakistans support was indispensable. I look forward to continuing to work with General Kayani to identify areas of mutual interest and to cooperate in efforts that can help improve regional security, US Embassy release quoted the ISAF commander as saying. The two commanders met last in May. Separately, US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W Patterson met with General Kayani at the GHQ on completion of her term as US envoy to Pakistan.
