KARACHI - SP Malik Maqsood who vowed to fight against the out-of-turn promotions of police officials, was critically injured in a targeted attack in Lines Area within the limits of Brigade police station here on Friday.

As per details, Malik Maqsood was on his way to the Sindh High Court when unidentified attackers ambushed his vehicle bearing registration number SP-3396 in Lines Area. He received three bullet shots and was rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment. Later his family shifted the SP to PN Shifa Hospital for further treatment.

Police reached the spot and cordoned off the area while the search to find the accused was also initiated. Police said that unidentified armed men on two cars intercepted his vehicle, sprayed bullets and managed to flee from the scene.

It may be mentioned here that former SSP crime branch had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against out of turn promotions in the department. Police remained clueless while the family and colleagues believed the police officers got out of turn promotions were behind the incident, as the SP had enmity with no one. The family, however, demanded the government and chief justice of Pakistan to take suo moto notice of the incident.

Malik Maqsood had challenged his seniors including SSP Farooq Awan, SP Khurram Waris, SSP Fayyaz Khan, SSP Raja Umar Khattab, SP Mazhar Mashwani in the court and filed a petition against the out of turn promotions, shoulder promotions, deputation and absorption.

It is pertinent to mention here that SP Malik Maqsood was also beaten by the police officials who got out of turn promotions within the registry of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on September 2012.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies claimed to have arrested a TTP member involved in various cases of target killings, drugs paddling and smuggling of arms and explosives in a city. Police said the accused had killed ANP candidate Sadiq Zaman Khattak, who was contesting elections for NA-254. Sadiq Zaman, his son and four others were killed in the pre-poll violence outside a mosque in Bilal Colony, Korangi Industrial Area on May 3, 2013.

Five more succumb to Karachi violence:

At least five people, including two men affiliated with Kutchi Rabita Community were killed in different incidents of violence here on Friday.

Lyari remained tensed as two KRC men were killed and three others wounded. The bodies and injured were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi for autopsy and medical treatment.

Scores of Lyari residents belonging to Kutchi community staged a protest and shouted slogans against the gangsters. Hussain Kutchi while talking to the Nation told the gangsters used to pick up their men and throw their shot dead mutilated bodies in the surrounding areas of Lyari. The said that frequent killing have compelled about 5,000 residents to evacuate their homes.

Separately, a man was gunned down near Kashti Chowk, within the remits of Garden Police Station. Some armed assailants ridding on a motorbike targeted Ghulam Rasool and managed to flee.

In another incident, police found a shot dead body from Old Hajji Camp and shifted it to morgue for identification after autopsy.

Police said the deceased was abducted, and tortured thrown at Pir Mehmood Shah Road, Lyari. On the other side, Baloch Colony police found a shot dead tortured body from a bungalow. Police said deceased Wasim Iqbal was killed by unknown assailants.
